RE-JE-CT-ED Rejected!

Written by: Rylie Wistuba

I remember in elementary school we would song this to boys who were rejected by girls who didn’t like them. We really thought it was funny, but truthfully, isn’t rejection one of the biggest fears most people have? Not being accepted by a potential love interest, friend, family, co-worker or boss can lead to some major turmoil. We all want to be accepted: AC-CE-PT-ED! 😉

I think I’ve always struggled with the feeling of rejection. If I was the last one picked for a sport, I would always take it personally: no one wanted me. My friends would go out without me, and I would assume they were trying to ditch me. People would cancel plans, and I thought “They probably didn’t want to meet up with me.” These feelings would go back and forth, dependent on circumstances: my friends would hangout with me, so I was accepted. I wasn’t picked last, so I was accepted. Then something would come up to make me re-evaluate eveything. Stories from friends about what they did the weekend before made my heart sink. “They habe more fun when I’m not around” I would think. My life has been hindered by basing my feelings of acceptance off of daily situations. I’ve been in spots where I don’t even try to do the things I want to because I think I will be turned away. I miss out on opportunities because l fear people won’t like what I’ve done. Why live life like this?

Then I think about Jesus. He had people throwing palm leaves at His feet, praising Him and shouting “Messiah”, and then a friend denied he even knew him- 3 times! He went from having 1000s of people following & listening to Him, to being betrayed, and murdered by the same people a week later! Jesus knows rejection.

“He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.”
Isaiah 53:3 NLT

He suffered the pain of the cross, and rejection by the people He loved, but he overcame! I know that whatever I’m going through, Jesus has gone it through before me. He gives us hope that even if the whole world rejects us, He will always be right next to us, guiding, comforting and teaching.

“For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”
2 Corinthians 4:17‭-‬18 NLT

“The Lord will not reject his people; he will not abandon his special possession… I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O Lord , supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
Psalms 94: 14, 18‭-‬19

Just remember: whether it be feelings of rejection, or true rejection from people, the only acceptance you need is from God, and He’s not going anywhere! He is the greatest counselor & comforter, and He knows exactly what you’re going through.
